New Teves, Russian Orthodox skete in Mount Athos, Greece
New Teves is a Russian Orthodox skete on Mount Athos located between Saint Paul Monastery and Saint Anne skete. It consists of roughly 28 individual dwellings, a central church, and supporting buildings spread across a hillside.
The community was established in 1753 and the central church dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God was completed in 1760. These two dates mark the building of this Russian center on the mountain.
The community here follows ancient rules through daily prayer and manual work that shapes monastic life. Visitors see traces of this rhythm everywhere: in the gardens, workshops, and the way monks structure their days.
The location sits on a hillside and requires walking over unpaved paths that can become slippery when wet. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and allow extra time for the uphill walk.
Excavations around the site have uncovered coins, graves, and other items indicating an ancient settlement existed here. These finds show that the location was inhabited long before the monastery was built.
