Dochiariou monastery, Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos, Greece
Dochiariou monastery is an Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos featuring stone buildings constructed in traditional Byzantine monastic style. The complex spreads across several levels on the southwestern coast and includes monks' cells, a church, and supporting structures.
The monastery was founded in the 10th century but relocated to its current location in the 11th century to escape pirate raids at the original port. This move to a more protected position marked a turning point in its growth and survival.
The monastery is named after an early Christian martyr and serves as a spiritual center where monks gather for daily prayer services that structure their communal life. Visitors can sense how these rhythms of worship shape everything that happens within the complex.
Only male visitors can visit the monastery and must obtain special permits to access Mount Athos peninsula. It helps to check current entry rules in advance and allow time for traveling to and from the site.
The main church contains frescoes painted in 1568 by a Cretan artist that were later added to in the 1780s. These artworks show two distinct artistic periods side by side within the monastery's interior.
