Koutloumousiou monastery, Orthodox monastery in Mount Athos, Greece
Koutloumousiou is an Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos featuring several chapels and a large central church from the 16th century. The complex sits on the northeastern side of the mountain near Karyes and shows traditional Byzantine architecture with stone buildings.
The monastery was first documented in 1169, but took its current form in 1301 when Koutloumous founded this religious complex. These early centuries shaped the religious and architectural structure that continues to this day.
The monastery library holds a significant collection of manuscripts and printed books accumulated over centuries. These works reflect how the community has maintained Orthodox Christian scholarship and religious knowledge through generations.
The monastery accepts only male visitors, following the traditional rules of Mount Athos. A community of about 26 monks lives there and carries out daily religious practices that shape life on the mountain.
The monastery connects to Karyes through a stone bridge built specifically for this purpose, linking the community to the administrative center of Mount Athos. It ranks sixth among the mountain's twenty monasteries and is one of the older established communities.
