Marathos Island, Island in Patmos Municipality, Greece
Marathos Island is a small island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Dodecanese and belonging to the Patmos Municipality. Its coastline is rocky, dotted with small coves and tiny beaches, while the interior is crossed by uneven paths leading to open views of the sea.
For centuries, Marathos served as a stopping point for fishermen and sailors crossing the Aegean. It never grew into a busy settlement, which is why the island still looks much as it always has.
A few old chapels are scattered across the island and can be found while walking the rocky paths. They are a quiet reminder of the religious ties that have shaped life here for many generations.
The island is reached only by boat, usually from nearby larger islands, and the crossing offers open views of the Aegean. Once there, sturdy footwear is a good idea since the paths are rocky and uneven throughout.
Although Marathos is part of the Dodecanese, it does not appear on most tourist maps and is quietly passed over by the majority of travelers. The small harbor still sees fishing boats stopping to load supplies or rest, much as they have done for generations.
