Kainuu, Administrative region in Northern Finland
Kainuu is a region in Northern Finland covered in dense forests, dotted with numerous lakes, and featuring rolling hills with elevations reaching about 1,260 feet (385 meters). The city of Kajaani functions as the main hub and administrative center.
The region developed from the historical province of Ostrobothnia and underwent major administrative reorganization starting in 2009. These changes shaped how the area is organized and governed today.
The Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and Kajaani Poetry Week draw visitors and residents who share interests in music and literature throughout the year. These events reflect how the region values artistic expression as part of everyday community life.
The region connects to other parts of Finland through Kajaani Airport, railway services, and road networks. Visitors can find services and facilities in Kajaani and several smaller towns throughout the area.
The sparse population of around 3.5 people per square kilometer makes it one of Finland's least densely populated areas. This low density contributes to the sense of openness and quietness that visitors often notice when exploring the landscape.
