Srđ, Mountain summit at Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia.
Srđ is a mountain about 412 meters high near Dubrovnik and forms part of the Dinaric Alps along the Adriatic coastline. A fortress built between 1806 and 1816 crowns the summit and overlooks the city below.
The fortress was built during the Napoleonic Wars to protect the coastal region from military threats. In 1991, the mountain became a critical defensive position during the siege of Dubrovnik.
The white cross on the summit reflects local religious traditions and stands as a rebuilt symbol after wartime destruction. It remains visible from the city below and holds personal meaning for many people in the region.
A modern cable car connects the summit with Dubrovnik, providing easy access to the mountaintop without walking. The gondola operates throughout the day and is straightforward to find near the city center.
The fortress served as a critical defense position during the 1991 siege, protecting the city from above. From the summit today, visitors can see the strategic vantage point that made this location so important to the conflict.
