Slatina, town and settlement in Virovitica-Podravina County, Croatia
Slatina is a town in Virovitica-Podravina County, Croatia, sitting where flat farmland meets the lower slopes of Papuk mountain. The Drava River runs to the north of the town, while the Papuk nature park shapes the hills to the south.
Slatina grew in an area shaped by farming and wine-making going back many centuries. A winery founded nearby in the late 1800s started producing sparkling wine using traditional methods, and it is considered the first of its kind in Croatia.
The area around Slatina has a long tradition of wine-making, and local cellars still use methods passed down through generations. Sparkling wine made here following traditional techniques put this small Croatian town on the map for wine lovers.
The town center is easy to walk around, and marked trails lead into the surrounding hills and forests toward Papuk. Sturdy shoes are a good idea if you plan to head off the main streets and into the countryside.
A redwood tree standing in the town center is around 200 years old and roughly 160 feet (50 meters) tall. It is the only tree of its species recorded in Croatia, which makes it a protected natural monument.
