Ploče Gate, Dubrovnik, porta di Dubrovnik
The Ploče Gate is the main eastern entrance to Dubrovnik's Old Town and consists of an inner and outer section connected by a stone bridge. The structure displays medieval construction with later Baroque additions made after the 1667 earthquake.
The gate was built in the late 14th century and served the city's defense through its strategic location and original drawbridge mechanism. After the devastating 1667 earthquake, it was rebuilt with Baroque elements while retaining its medieval character.
The gate takes its name from the nearby district and serves as a living passage between the outside world and the heart of the old city. The square beyond it is where residents and visitors gather, experiencing the daily rhythm of urban life.
Access is available throughout the day and requires comfortable shoes for exploring the uneven pavement and narrow streets beyond. The location can become crowded during peak morning hours, so visiting in the evening is preferable.
Above the inner gate stands a statue of Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, depicted holding a model of the city in his hands. The veneration of Saint Blaise has been central to the city for centuries and is celebrated annually on February 3rd.
