Cista Velika

Cista Velika is a settlement in the Municipality of Cista Provo in Split-Dalmatia County with several prehistoric and medieval archaeological sites. The village today appears as a small rural area with scattered homes and important monuments marking its layered past.

The area contains Bronze Age tumuli including Velika and Mala Crljivica, linked to early settlement patterns in the region. These prehistoric remnants demonstrate continuous occupation of the landscape across multiple millennia.

The medieval cemetery contains 102 stecak tombstones carved with crosses, stylized lilies, hunting scenes, and dancing figures. These monuments, marked with Cyrillic inscriptions, tell stories of the people who once lived in this region.

The settlement is located in a karst landscape and is best accessed by local roads following the Trilj-Imotski route. Visitors should expect rural conditions and uneven terrain when exploring the archaeological sites scattered across the area.

Seven medieval wells are preserved in a karst sinkhole, demonstrating how early residents managed water in this dry landscape. These wells near the main Trilj-Imotski road offer insight into the practical challenges and solutions of past inhabitants.
