Crljivica

Crljivica is an archaeological cemetery containing around 102 limestone tombstones arranged in a linear formation along an ancient road. The site sits on ground that was used for burials over several centuries and holds layers of earlier occupation.

The tombstones date from the 14th and 15th centuries and were placed over a Roman road that once connected distant regions. The road itself had been built on top of an even earlier Bronze Age settlement, revealing the long history of this crossing point.

The carved tombstones display religious symbols, hunting scenes, and daily life imagery that reflect the values of medieval communities. These decorations show what mattered to people living in this region centuries ago.

The site has prepared pathways that guide visitors to the tombstones across the landscape. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground is uneven and the paths wind through natural terrain.

Seven Roman water wells remain visible among the medieval tombstones, offering clues to the site's use in ancient times. These wells demonstrate that people stopped here to rest and refill supplies long before the medieval burials began.
