Tugare, Settlement in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia
Tugare is a settlement in Split-Dalmatia that spreads across several valleys and mountain sides, consisting of many small hamlets. It sits between two branches of Mosor mountain and includes numerous villages such as Ume, Podume, and Račnik.
The settlement first appears in written records from the 9th century in a royal charter during early Croatian history. This early documentation shows that the area was populated and politically significant at that distant time.
The settlement is a center of singing with three active church choirs that shape community life. An annual festival here draws singers and folk performers from the surrounding region.
The various hamlets each have sports facilities such as illuminated football fields, basketball courts, and boules courts. Visitors should know that the settlement spreads across a large area and local knowledge helps in reaching different spots.
The area was once known for a specific variety of cherries called 'tugarka' locally that shaped its farming. This special cherry disappeared unexpectedly at the end of the 20th century and is no longer found in the region.
