Angolkert, English garden in Tata, Hungary
Angolkert is a large landscape garden in Tata featuring artificial lakes, winding paths, and numerous plant species arranged in a natural, informal pattern across the grounds. The layout includes open meadows, wooded areas, and water features that together create a varied and flowing environment.
Ferenc Böhm designed this garden in 1783 based on English landscape principles, introducing a new approach to gardening in Hungary at that time. This early project helped establish the style across the region.
This garden served as a gathering place for aristocratic families, where people spent afternoons enjoying music and conversation under the trees. The summer residence with its decorated rooms shows how the wealthy lived and entertained in nature.
The garden is open year-round and features walking paths throughout, though some areas may become muddy during wet seasons. The summer residence inside can be visited separately but requires an additional entry or booking.
Underground springs feed the garden with natural water, creating specific soil conditions across the grounds. This allowed the designer to cultivate plant species from different climates that would not normally thrive in this region.
