The Botanical Garden is a park containing thousands of plant species spread across expansive grounds in central Budapest. The site includes several greenhouses of varying sizes where plants from different climates are cultivated.

The institution was founded in the late 1700s as a teaching and research center for medical education. After relocating several times, it found its current home in the mid-1800s, where it has continued to develop since.

The name "Füvészkert" is a 19th-century Hungarian coinage for "botanical garden" that survived because Molnár Ferenc set the hideout of Nemecsek and his friends in the garden's old palm house in A Pál utcai fiúk. The garden's official name reverted to Füvészkert on 30 June 2008 by decision of the ELTE Senate.

The garden covers 3.1 hectares at Illés utca 25 in Józsefváros, with greenhouses covering more than 2,000 m². Its central location makes it easy to reach by public transport. Allow time to walk between the outdoor beds, the Victoria House and the Australian House.

The garden's name survived through literature: "füvészkert" is a language-reform era synonym for botanical garden, kept alive by Molnár Ferenc's novel A Pál utcai fiúk, in which the old palm house shelters Nemecsek and his friends. In 2008 the university senate restored it as the official name.
