Nagyvárad téri Elméleti Tömb, Medical education building in District VIII, Hungary
The Nagyvárad téri Elméleti Tömb is an education and administration building for Semmelweis University in Budapest, rising 88 meters across 22 floors. It houses multiple lecture halls for teaching, seminar rooms, and administrative offices to serve students.
The building came from a 1963 architecture competition won by László Wágner, Ernő Südi, and Gedeon Gerlóczy. Construction started in 1971 to create modern teaching space for medical education in Budapest.
The central hall features a stained glass window made by artist Gyula Hincz that rises 7 meters high and spans 21 meters across. This artwork shapes the impression visitors get when entering the building and shows how artistic design goes beyond pure function.
The two main lecture halls, known as the green and brown auditoriums, serve as the centers for teaching in the building. Visitors should know the structure is mainly used for academic activities and access can vary depending on what events are scheduled.
The building hosts an annual firefighter competition where participants climb stairs wearing 30 kilogram equipment from ground level to the top floor. This unusual contest makes the structure a place for physical challenges beyond its regular purpose.
