Holocaust Memorial Center, Holocaust museum and memorial in Pava Street, Budapest, Hungary
The Holocaust Memorial Center integrates the restored Pava Street Synagogue with contemporary architecture using glass and concrete across multiple levels. Inside, photographs, personal items, and documents are displayed to document the persecution of Jews, Roma, and other minorities.
The institution was established by the Hungarian government in 1999 and was the first Holocaust memorial center founded by a state in Central Europe. It arose from the need to preserve and document local persecution.
The space brings together remembrance of those persecuted with a place where visitors discover personal stories and understand the impact across different communities. The exhibitions show how this period affected people from various backgrounds.
Visitors should allow time to explore the multiple levels and exhibitions thoroughly as there is substantial material to discover. Guided tours are available in various languages and school groups can participate in educational programs.
A memorial wall in the courtyard displays approximately 60,000 names of Hungarian Holocaust victims and allows visitors to search for family members. These names make the enormous human losses immediately tangible.
