Közvágóhíd, Public space in District IX, Budapest, Hungary
Közvágóhíd is a public space in the 9th district of Budapest, in the eastern part of the city, not far from the Danube. The area connects several residential neighborhoods and sits close to major transport links.
The site was once Budapest's central slaughterhouse, built in the late 19th century during the city's rapid industrial growth. Over the course of the 20th century it gradually lost its original function and slowly began to be converted into a residential area.
The name Közvágóhíd means "public slaughterhouse" in Hungarian, and it still points directly to what this place once was. Some of the old industrial buildings remain standing, giving the area a look quite different from other parts of Budapest.
The area is easy to reach by public transport, with several train stations and bus stops nearby. Some parts of the site may still be affected by ongoing construction work, so it is worth allowing extra time when exploring on foot.
The original 19th-century slaughterhouse complex had its own rail connection, built specifically to move animals and goods in and out of the site. Traces of that infrastructure can still be spotted on the ground today.
