Rezi Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Rezi, Hungary.
Rezi Castle is a medieval fortress ruin perched on a hilltop north of Lake Balaton in Western Transdanubia. The stone walls rise from the elevated terrain and command views across the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was built after the Mongol invasions of the 13th century in response to emerging threats. It first appeared in written records in 1387 under the name Castrum Rezy when owned by the Lackfi family.
The ruin represents a chapter in local power struggles between regional nobles who controlled these lands. Visitors walking through can sense how the fortified position served as a seat of authority over the surrounding area.
The path to the ruins involves a hiking trail of about 5 kilometers through the mountainous terrain of Keszthely Mountain. Proper footwear is essential as the route can be muddy or slippery depending on recent weather.
The walls bear traces of 16th century modifications when defensive structures were reinforced to withstand artillery fire. These structural changes remain visible in how the stones were reworked and repositioned.
