Our Lady of Hungary church in Keszthely, Gothic Catholic church in Keszthely, Hungary.
Our Lady of Hungary church in Keszthely is a Gothic building with walls made of crushed stone and carved blocks used at edges and important architectural features. The interior features a structured layout with a chancel where original artistic details remain visible.
Construction of this church was commissioned in 1386 by István Laczkfy, as documented by an inscription on the triumphal arch inside. Later, around 1550, the building received fortification improvements designed by Italian engineer Giulio Turco.
The church displays original frescoes in the chancel painted by different artists before the building was completed in the 1380s. These works show how artistic styles developed in the region during that era.
The building is easy to reach on foot and can be viewed from outside with clear architectural features visible. The interior is best visited during daylight hours to appreciate the frescoes and architectural details clearly.
The building underwent a major transformation in 1878 when its original roof was replaced with a tall steeple of about 60 meters featuring a rose window from the facade. This redesign dramatically changed how the structure appears in the town.
