Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, Nuclear bunker museum in Buda Castle Quarter, Hungary
Hospital in the Rock is an underground medical museum located in the Buda Castle District, built into a natural cave system. The spaces display wards, operating theaters, and areas that show how a complete medical facility functioned beneath the ground.
The facility was planned in 1939 and became operational in 1944 during World War II as an emergency surgical center. After the war, it served various purposes before being converted into a museum in 2007.
The museum displays over 200 wax figures that show medical procedures and daily work from the wartime hospital years. They help visitors understand how doctors and nurses operated here during those difficult times.
Visitors can only explore the site through guided tours offered multiple times daily, each lasting about one hour. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the pathways are uneven and the temperature underground remains constantly cool.
After the war ended, the facility was used for vaccine production and played a role in postwar medical care. This unexpected use shows how the bunker served different purposes across the decades.
