The Arany Sas Pharmacy Museum occupies a Gothic building with a neoclassical facade and Baroque interiors at Tárnok utca 18, where the pharmacy was installed in 1922. Its restored rooms display Renaissance and Baroque pharmaceutical objects, including bottles and preparation equipment, arranged as a working historical pharmacy.
Founded in 1687 by Bösinger Ferenc Ignác, it was the first pharmacy in Buda after the Turkish expulsion, first at Dísz tér 1-2 and from 1687 to 1696 at Dísz tér 6. Named Arany Egyszarvúhoz, it was renamed Arany Sas in 1740 by owner Hinger János. Moved repeatedly along Tárnok utca, it reached its present Tárnok utca 18 site in 1922; in 1966 it was attached to the Semmelweis Medical History Museum, and the museum opened in 1974.
The museum's permanent exhibition is titled "Pharmacy in the Renaissance and Baroque Era." The name Arany Sas (Golden Eagle) replaced the original Arany Egyszarvúhoz (Golden Unicorn) in 1740, when owner Hinger János renamed it. The pharmacy also held the title "city pharmacy" and displayed Buda's coat of arms on its signboard.
The museum is at Tárnok utca 18, in the Castle District of District I, a short walk from Dísz tér and the Matthias Church area. It is a unit of the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History, and the restored rooms hold the exhibition "Pharmacy in the Renaissance and Baroque Era". Allow under an hour.
