Court Theatre of Buda, Historic theatre in Budapest Castle District, Hungary
The Court Theatre of Buda is a Baroque structure with three tiers of seating, originally built as a Carmelite monastery in 1736. Its interior layout with multiple levels creates an intimate connection between stage and audience.
Emperor Joseph II ordered the conversion of the Carmelite monastery into a theatre in 1786. Wolfgang von Kempelen oversaw the transformation and redesigned the altar space as a stage.
This venue played a crucial role in Hungarian cultural identity by hosting early performances in the Hungarian language. It became a symbol of national expression at a time when German dominated the stages.
The building is located at Szinhaz Street 1-3 in the Castle Quarter and can be reached from multiple access points. Today it serves as an administrative building and is generally not open to regular visitors.
Ludwig van Beethoven performed a concert here in 1800, contributing to the building's prominence in European musical history. This performance remains one of the most notable moments in its past.
