Hungarian National Gallery, Art museum in Buda Castle, Hungary
The Hungarian National Gallery occupies multiple wings within the Royal Palace and displays paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts across several levels. The collection spans from medieval times to the twentieth century.
The museum was founded in 1957 and holds the largest collection of Hungarian art ever assembled. Its holdings came from royal collections and were expanded significantly over the decades.
The collection shows different forms of art created by Hungarian artists across centuries. You can trace how artistic styles changed from the Middle Ages through modern times.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and is situated within the palace building with multiple entrances. Comfortable shoes are recommended since you will use many stairs.
From the building's dome you can enjoy panoramic views across Budapest. This vantage point from the former palace is not immediately obvious to most visitors.
