Big rondella

The Big Rondella is a circular fortification on Castle Hill with thick stone walls and multiple bastions. This structure formed part of the layered defense system and features gun ports and cannon positions.

This fortification developed as part of Castle Hill's defenses and was reinforced and modified several times over the centuries. It served a central role in defending against attackers during different periods of Budapest's history.

The fortification structure contains architectural elements that demonstrate medieval Hungarian military engineering and construction techniques from different periods.

Visitors reach the fortification on foot from the castle entrance or via the historic pathways climbing the hill. The terrain is steep, so comfortable shoes and drinking water are recommended.

The stone structures display different construction phases and building techniques from various centuries visible in the walls. You can still identify original gun positions at many spots where defenders once controlled river crossings.
