Castle Bazaar, Neo-Renaissance cultural complex at Castle Hill, Budapest, Hungary
Castle Bazaar is a Neo-Renaissance cultural complex on Castle Hill with arcades, decorative staircases, and ornamental details designed by architect Miklós Ybl. The structures stretch along the Danube riverbank and link the Royal Palace with surrounding gardens and public spaces.
Built between 1875 and 1883 following architect Miklós Ybl's designs, the complex was part of a larger project to connect the Royal Palace with the city below. The construction aimed to create space for both commerce and public leisure activities.
The complex hosts art exhibitions and concerts in its palace buildings throughout the year. These events have made it a popular meeting place for people interested in art and live performances.
The site is accessible via stairs and escalators from the Danube promenade, with multiple entry points throughout the complex. Wear sturdy shoes as you navigate the paved surfaces and multiple levels.
During renovation work in 2014, workers discovered a medieval Jewish ritual bath, known as a Mikveh, hidden beneath the structures. This finding reveals the presence of a Jewish community in the area during the Middle Ages.
