Solymár Cave, Cave system in Solymár, Hungary
Solymár Cave is a cave system in the Budai Mountains featuring extensive underground passages that branch in multiple directions. The cave network descends to significant depths, creating a complex labyrinth beneath the forest floor.
Geological exploration of the cave started in 1868 when Antal Koch first documented it. Significant research campaigns by the Hungarian Cave Research Society followed during the 1930s and 1940s.
Researchers discovered Neolithic pottery fragments and fossilized remains of prehistoric animals, including a complete moose skeleton within the cave chambers.
The cave is accessible via marked hiking trails starting from Solymár or the neighboring village of Nagykovácsi. Walking from the nearest bus stops takes roughly 30 minutes to reach the entrance area.
The cave system has three distinct entrances, including the primary opening facing east and two smaller passages called Pipa and Rókalyuk. These multiple access points allow visitors to explore different paths through the underground network.
