Kőröshegy viaduct, Road bridge near Lake Balaton, Hungary
Kőröshegy viaduct is a motorway bridge spanning the Kőrös Valley near Lake Balaton, forming part of the M7 expressway. The prestressed concrete structure reaches 1,872 meters in length and stands 88 meters (289 feet) above the valley floor.
Construction began in the early 2000s as part of the M7 motorway expansion southward. Work finished in September 2007, connecting Budapest more efficiently to the Croatian border.
The name comes from the village of Kőröshegy, which sits near the southern end. Drivers see open fields and the outline of the lake in the distance from the roadway.
The structure serves motorway traffic only and pedestrians cannot access the roadway. Visitors wanting to view the height and span from below can find field paths in the valley beneath.
Three concrete plants supplied a total of 180,000 cubic meters of material during construction, with one positioned directly beside the building site. Lifts inside selected pillars allow maintenance teams access to the full height of the structure.
