Outer lake

Outer Lake is a protected water body on the Tihany Peninsula situated within Balaton Uplands National Park at roughly 116 meters above sea level. The water and shorelines host diverse plant and animal life that characterize this shallow basin.

The lake originated from volcanic activity that shaped the Tihany Peninsula long ago. Over time drainage projects changed the water for farming purposes, but since 1976 restoration efforts have brought it back.

The lake sits beside the Benedictine Abbey and shapes how locals and visitors experience this peninsula. Walking around the water, you notice how the monastery and natural setting blend together in people's daily life and tourism here.

You can explore this water body using marked trails throughout the park that are easy to follow. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking, and you will notice more wildlife activity during these seasons.

This water body fills an old volcanic crater and is one of three lakes found on the peninsula itself. The volcanic geology here creates a rare landscape where different water bodies sit close together.
