Paulay Ede utca 35., Theatrical organization in Budapest, Hungary
Újszínház occupies the building at Paulay Ede utca 35 in Budapest's District VI, next to the Opera. Lajta Béla designed it in 1908–1909 as a cabaret house; its grey marble-clad facade carries a wide dark frieze with blue panels and gold ornaments, and copper cherub figures on the attic. Inside, the elongated auditorium holds 330 seats under an 11-metre ceiling, with a chamber room added beside the main stage in 1988–1991.
The building was designed by Béla Lajta and built in 1908–1909 as a venue for artistic dance; the Parisiana Orfeum opened there on 13 February 1909. From 1921 László Vágó's plans created a theatre interior, and from 1945 the Művész Színház played here. In 1994 Gábor Székely won the tender to found the Új Színház in the building, renamed Újszínház in 2012.
The building began as the Parisiana Orfeum, a cabaret and variety venue opened on 13 February 1909, and its upper-floor podium was built for cabaret performances. Since 1999 the company has awarded the Paulay Ede Prize, decided by secret ballot of the ensemble; actor Holl István received it first. From 2014 the theatre has hosted an annual Christian Theatre Festival with Hungarian and cross-border productions.
The theatre stands at Paulay Ede utca 35 in Budapest's District VI, next to the Opera and the former Ballet Institute. The auditorium holds 330 seats and is 11 metres high, with a chamber room added beside the main stage in the 1988–1991 reconstruction. The entrance is on the street front under the stepped, medallion-supported projecting section.
The building began in 1908–1909 as the Parisiana Orfeum, a venue for artistic dance designed by Lajta Béla. Its attic once carried embossed, partly gilded copper cherubs. In 1962 Budapest's first curtain wall, of yellow and blue glass panels, was fitted over the facade; the 1989 reconstruction by Kőnig Tamás and Wagner Péter restored Lajta's 1909 front.
