Cserepes-sziget, Artificial island in Lake Velence, Hungary
Cserepes-sziget is an artificially constructed island built with approximately one million cubic meters of sediment and reeds in the central part of Lake Velence. It features concrete pillars around its perimeter and designated zones for water-based activities.
The island was created between 1977 and 1978 during lake bed regulation works that fundamentally reshaped the region. These water management projects opened new possibilities for lakeside development and recreation.
The island hosts water sports events where kayak, canoe, and dragon boat races take place throughout the year. Visitors can watch these competitions directly from the shore or experience the energy of the events from the water.
The island is easily accessible by boat with landing points for various watercraft. Visitors should prepare for changing lake conditions and bring appropriate water-based equipment.
The island was built from sediment extracted from the lake bed itself, using local reed vegetation for stabilization. This makes it a striking example of how the region's natural materials were transformed into a functioning landmass.
