Church of the Assumption of Mary and John of Nepomuk

The Church of the Assumption of Mary and John of Nepomuk is a Baroque building with twin towers topped with clocks that dominate the streetscape. The facade features decorated windows and wall pilasters, while the interior contains three adjoining side chapels along the nave.

The Jesuits built this church between 1745 and 1756 on a site with a complicated past. It replaced an earlier religious building that had been repurposed during Ottoman occupation.

The church honors two saints whose names reflect different spiritual traditions honored here. The interior displays artwork depicting Hungary's connection to the Virgin Mary through its royal history, which visitors can observe throughout the space.

The church welcomes visitors and holds regular services, so it is best to check when these take place before arriving. The attached monastery building now serves as a museum and can be visited separately from the church itself.
