Boldog Özséb Observation Tower, Observation tower in Pilisszentkereszt, Hungary
The Boldog Özséb Tower is a wooden observation tower in Pilisszentkereszt that rises to 17.25 meters at an elevation of about 756 meters on Pilis-tető mountain. The structure provides an elevated viewing platform with open sightlines across the surrounding landscape.
The tower was transformed in 2014 from a concrete structure built in the 1980s that originally served as a geodetic tower next to a former military base. That base had monitored airspace over Budapest until 1996.
The tower carries the name of a saint who once lived as a hermit in these mountains and founded a monastic order. This connection reflects the region's deep religious heritage.
The tower is free to access and can be reached via paved paths from the Két-Bükkfa-nyereg parking area or through hiking routes from nearby villages. The approach is straightforward and suits different mobility levels.
The structure sits on the grounds of a former radar installation, revealing its military past even as it now serves as a peaceful outing spot. This dual history shows how older buildings can gain new purpose.
