Fort Kastella, Portuguese fort in Ternate, Indonesia.
Fort Kastella stands on the southwest coast of Ternate Island, featuring stone walls and bastions that extend across the coastal terrain.
Portuguese settlers constructed Fort Kastella in 1522 as their first fortification in the Spice Islands, completing it on February 15, 1523.
The fort received its name from Saint John the Baptist, reflecting Portuguese religious traditions while serving as a central point for spice trade.
Visitors can reach the fort through the Kastela Santo Paulo Highway, with the site opening daily for exploration of its remaining structures.
The fort contains a relief depicting the assassination of Sultan Khaerun by Antonio Pimental, an event that led to Portuguese evacuation from Ternate.
