Ennis, County town in County Clare, Ireland
Ennis is a town in County Clare in the Republic of Ireland, located along the River Fergus and formed by narrow lanes with stone houses from past centuries. The streets follow the river course and open in places to small squares with shops and cafés.
The O'Brien dynasty founded a fortress on the riverbank in the 12th century and invited Franciscan monks in 1240 to build a monastery. The town developed around this site and later became the administrative seat of the county.
The Glór Irish Music Centre hosts concerts featuring traditional Irish instruments and singing. Musicians in the old town pubs often play together without announcement during the summer months.
Shannon Airport is about 24 kilometers away and can be reached by bus or taxi. Trains and long-distance buses connect the town with Dublin, Galway and Limerick.
The River Fergus divides into two channels within the town and forms an island in the middle. The Irish name Inis means exactly this: island.
