Proleek Dolmen, Neolithic portal tomb in County Louth, Ireland.
Proleek Dolmen is a Neolithic portal tomb in County Louth with two upright portal stones supporting a massive capstone, its rear face oriented northwest. The structure displays the typical construction method used for these ancient burial chambers.
The structure was built around 3000 BC during the Neolithic period as a cremation burial site. Archaeological discoveries show that tools, beads, and pottery were placed with the deceased.
The site is linked to wedding traditions that visitors still practice today by placing stones on the structure. Local communities continue to pass down these customs across generations.
The monument is located on Ballymascanlon Hotel's golf course and requires permission from hotel staff to access the walking paths. Entry is on foot, but it is best to check ahead and follow the hotel's guidelines.
About 90 meters southeast stands Giant's Grave, a wedge-shaped gallery tomb with its own archaeological importance. This second structure makes the site a complex with multiple prehistoric elements.
