Clermont Carn, Mountain summit in County Louth, Ireland.
Clermont Carn is a mountain summit in the Cooley Mountains in County Louth, rising to approximately 510 meters above sea level. At its highest point stands a prominent megalithic cairn dating back to prehistoric times.
The summit contains a chambered cairn from the early Neolithic period, built between around 4000 and 3500 BCE. This ancient structure survived thousands of years and testifies to early human settlements in the region.
The mountain's Irish name refers to a noble Margaret and connects to Lord Clermont of Ravensdale. This connection appears in the stories and local traditions tied to the place.
The summit is accessible via a well-maintained telecommunications track that climbs from lower elevations. Parking facilities are available nearby and serve as a good starting point for exploring the wider Cooley Mountains area.
The mountain hosts a rare vertically polarised television transmitter that has broadcast digital services since 2012. This broadcasting tower is one of only a few of its type in Ireland and shapes the appearance of the summit.
