Clermont Cairn, chambered cairn / court cairn in County Louth, Ireland

Clermont Cairn is a large stone mound situated on top of Black Mountain in the Cooley Mountains. The structure features a round cairn with internal chambers and galleries that once served as a burial place, built during the early Neolithic period around 5000 years ago.

The structure was built around 5000 years ago during the early Neolithic period as a burial site and belongs to a group of monuments called court cairns. Over time quarrying damaged the site, but it was eventually protected as a national monument to preserve its historical significance.

The site is called Clermont Cairn after the stone structure that has occupied this mountaintop for millennia. Visitors today experience it as a place of quiet reflection where the ancient stones invite contemplation about those who built it long ago.

The best time to visit is during dry weather since the mountain is exposed and access is on foot. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress for changing weather conditions, as the mountaintop offers little shelter.

A modern broadcasting transmitter with radio antennas has occupied the summit since 1981, creating an unexpected contrast with the ancient stones. The equipment was updated in 2002 and broadcasts television and radio signals across northeastern Ireland and into Northern Ireland.
