Tory Island, Remote island in County Donegal, Ireland

Tory Island is a inhabited island off the coast of Donegal, shaped by steep cliffs carved by Atlantic waves, with four distinct settlements spread across its landscape. The terrain is rugged and windswept, featuring dramatic rock formations that define the island's character.

A monastery was established on the island in the 6th century by Colmcille, serving as an important religious center for the surrounding region. English forces destroyed the structure during a military campaign in 1595.

The island has developed as an artistic hub where painters and sculptors continue to create and exhibit work inspired by the rugged coastal environment. Local craftspeople maintain traditional skills passed down through families, visible in the workshops scattered across the settlements.

Ferry services operate from Magheroarty and Bunbeg ports to reach the island, with journeys taking around 45 minutes. Weather can change quickly and crossings may be cancelled in strong winds, so visitors should remain flexible with their plans.

The island maintains a tradition of selecting a local King who greets visitors and serves as an ambassador for the community. This unusual custom gives the place a distinctive identity that sets it apart from other Irish island communities.
