Mahane Yehuda Market, Market hall in Jerusalem, Israel
Mahane Yehuda Market is a covered and open-air market hall in the Mahane Yehuda neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel, running between Bezalel Street and Jaffa Road. The lanes hold stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, bread, cheese, nuts, spices, household items, and flowers.
Arab farmers began setting up temporary stalls along Jaffa Road in the late 19th century to supply the new Jewish neighborhoods developing west of the Old City. The market grew over the decades into a permanent covered trading center with fixed structures.
The market includes 80 restaurants representing multiple culinary traditions, from Middle Eastern street food to international cuisine, alongside traditional produce vendors.
Most activity happens during daylight hours when shoppers walk through the narrow lanes between stalls and inspect goods. In the evening, some areas shift character as restaurants and bars open and a different crowd arrives.
On Thursday and Friday mornings the market fills especially heavily as families prepare shopping for Shabbat and the lanes become lively. Many stalls close by Friday afternoon before sunset and remain shut until Saturday evening.
