Tamar gas field, offshore natural gas field in the exclusive economic zone of Israel
Tamar gas field is a natural gas field located about 90 kilometers west of Haifa, beneath the sea at a depth of around 1700 meters. Six wells extract gas from thick reservoir layers covering approximately 100 square kilometers, producing large daily volumes for domestic use and export.
The field was discovered in January 2009 and began producing gas in March 2013, less than four years after its discovery. This rapid development became crucial for Israel after Egypt halted gas supplies, allowing the country to secure its own energy source and reduce reliance on imported fuels.
The operation is run from a large platform built to withstand harsh deep-sea conditions, with redundant systems to ensure gas flows continuously even if one component fails. The field maintains availability above 99.98 percent, providing consistent and reliable supply.
Gas exports from the field began in January 2017 to Jordan, marking Israel's first natural gas export agreement. This supply to Jordanian companies demonstrates how the field extends its strategic importance beyond Israel's borders.
