Mamilla Mall, Shopping center near Old City walls, Jerusalem, Israel
Mamilla Mall is a shopping center near the Old City walls featuring a 600-meter open pedestrian promenade with international brands, cafes, and restaurants. The design by architect Moshe Safdie incorporates preserved 19th-century stone buildings throughout the layout.
The Mamilla neighborhood took shape in the 1800s as a commercial district linking the Old City to Jerusalem's expanding modern sections to the west. The current shopping center emerged in the early 2000s through the renovation and integration of these older structures.
The shopping center weaves together old stone facades with modern retail, creating a space where past and present coexist side by side. Walking through, you notice how the architecture draws on Jerusalem's layered history while serving today's shoppers.
The site is easy to walk through and well-marked, with open access to the promenade and shops throughout the day. Keep in mind that Sabbath affects operating hours, with many establishments closed on Saturdays and limited access during evening hours on Fridays.
Glass floors in certain areas reveal archaeological remains beneath the ground, letting you glimpse ancient artifacts while shopping. This transparent design allows the older layers of the site's story to be part of your visit.
