IDE - Sorek Desalination Plant, Desalination plant near Tel Aviv, Israel.
The Sorek Desalination Plant is a large water treatment facility on the Mediterranean coast south of Tel Aviv. It uses reverse osmosis technology to clean seawater and feeds the purified water directly into the national supply network.
The plant opened in 2013 to address the country's chronic water shortage through modern large-scale infrastructure. Since then it has become a major part of Israel's water supply system.
The facility represents Israel's commitment to technological solutions, providing drinking water to more than 20 percent of the population.
The facility sits on the coast and is not open to the public inside, but can be viewed from the nearby beach. The best views come from public beach areas in the late afternoon when the light is softer.
The plant uses over 16,000 specialized membrane elements that convert seawater into drinking water under high pressure. This approach is so efficient that it now serves as a model for similar projects around the world.
