Nalanda district, Administrative district in Bihar, India
Located in the southern part of Bihar state, Nalanda district spans 2,367 square kilometers with Bihar Sharif serving as its capital within Patna division.
The district, established in 1972 after separating from Patna, contains remnants of the fifth-century Nalanda University, which functioned until the twelfth century.
Multiple languages flourish in the district, with Magahi and Hindi speakers representing the majority of the 2.8 million population recorded in 2011.
The district maintains strong transportation connections through roadways linking major cities, while agriculture forms the primary economic activity with rice and wheat cultivation.
The Pant Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajgir, established in 1978, covers 35 square kilometers of protected natural area within the district.
