Shahdara district, Administrative district in northeast Delhi, India
Shahdara is an administrative district in northeast Delhi comprising three subdivisions: Shahdara, Vivek Vihar, and Seemapuri, with its headquarters at Nand Nagri. The area borders the Yamuna river and is divided into several villages that together form a blend of urban and rural communities.
In the 18th century, this area functioned as a major grain distribution hub with warehouses supplying markets across the Yamuna toward Paharganj. This trading role shaped its early growth and made it an economic center for Delhi's commerce.
The name comes from Persian words 'shah' and 'dara', meaning 'door of kings', reflecting the district's ties to Delhi's royal past. You can sense this historical significance walking through the older neighborhoods and their buildings today.
The district is served by ten police stations and has five educational institutions along with ten hospitals for residents. Key landmarks like the administrative headquarters at Nand Nagri serve as useful orientation points when navigating the area.
The area sits directly on the banks of the Yamuna and includes about a dozen villages that still maintain their separate identities today. This village structure within a modern metropolis creates a rare urban pocket where rural character persists.
