Lake Tsongmo, Glacial lake in East Sikkim district, India
Lake Tsongmo is an oval glacial body of water in the East Sikkim district at an elevation of 3780 meters (12,400 feet), covering roughly 24 hectares. The water reaches a depth of up to 15 meters (49 feet) and stretches about 836 meters (2,743 feet) in length.
The Indian Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in November 2006 featuring this high-altitude water. The release marked official recognition of the site by government institutions.
Local residents consider the waters sacred and visit the shores for prayer and religious ceremonies throughout the year. Monks observe the shifting hues to interpret signs and guide communities in the valleys below.
Visitors need to secure a permit before traveling to the area because of its proximity to the border with China. Both Indian nationals and foreign guests must arrange this authorization in advance.
The surface freezes solid during winter, forming a continuous sheet of ice across the entire expanse. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons, primulas, and blue poppies along the shores, transforming the landscape into a wash of color.
