Jharsuguda district, Administrative district in Northern division, India
Jharsuguda district is an administrative area in Odisha with three main urban centers: Jharsuguda town, Brajrajnagar, and Belpahar. The region connects to other Indian cities through a railway junction on the Howrah-Mumbai line and the Veer Surendra Sai Airport, which opened in 2019.
The district was created in 1994 when it split from its parent region to serve local governance better. This separation allowed the rapidly growing industrial area to develop more independently.
Multiple tribal communities including Sabara, Kisan, and Kurukh live throughout the region, each keeping their own languages and customs alive. These groups shape daily life and local celebrations across different parts of the district.
Visitors can reach the area easily by train using the main Howrah-Mumbai line or by plane through the nearby airport. The three main towns serve as different starting points for exploring the district and its surrounding areas.
The area contains significant deposits of coal, iron ore, and bauxite that supply numerous mining operations and power plants. These natural resources have shaped the economy and appearance of the region for decades.
