Bidhannagar, Municipal corporation in West Bengal, India
Bidhannagar is a planned city in West Bengal comprising six sectors divided into forty-one wards, located just north of Kolkata. The layout includes residential blocks, commercial zones, and parks connected by a grid of wide avenues.
The city was developed between 1958 and 1965 according to plans by Serbian architect Dobrivoje Toskovic to relieve population pressure in Kolkata. The project followed a rational model with clearly defined zones for housing, work, and leisure.
The area maintains traditional Bengali celebrations while integrating modern educational institutions, with a literacy rate reaching ninety percent of the population.
Visitors can navigate the city using the sector-based numbering system, which makes finding addresses straightforward. Buses, taxis, and the commuter railway link the different neighborhoods to central Kolkata.
Sector V houses around 1,500 IT companies, forming the largest technology hub in Eastern India. The office towers and business parks draw professionals from across the country.
