Biswa Bangla Gate, Modern monument and restaurant in New Town, India
Biswa Bangla Gate is a 55-meter-tall steel structure standing in New Town on the outskirts of Kolkata. Four supporting columns hold a circular viewing gallery that hovers above the ground and can be reached by elevators.
Work began in March 2017 and lasted until January 2018, with around 70 tons of steel used in the process. The structure was built as part of Kolkata's eastward urban expansion.
The name connects Bengali identity with modern urban planning and serves as a symbol for the region's development. Visitors recognize traditional patterns on the outer walls, which light up at night and stand out against the sky.
The gate stands at the intersection of Major Arterial Road and New Town Road and opens daily from 7 AM to 10 PM. Access to the viewing platform and restaurant is through elevators inside the columns.
The restaurant section hovers about 25 meters (82 feet) above the ground and offers views over New Town and Kolkata through glass walls. On clear days, the view extends to the old neighborhoods along the Hooghly River.
