The foundation stone of this contemporary art center was laid by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in November 2013.
The museum integrates galleries for modern art, performing arts, music, cinema, photography, literature, fine art, and sculpture under one roof.
The museum incorporates passive climate control methods and a central water basin that adjusts to seasonal monsoon changes.
Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron designed the building using traditional Indian construction techniques with stacked masonry blocks.
