The best time to visit falls between November and February when the weather is dry and mild. During the monsoon from June to September, roads can flood and some coastal sections become hard to reach.
Red laterite soil covers much of the coastal plain and was traditionally used as building material for houses and forts. Today you can still find old structures whose rust color stands out against the green hinterland.
