Colachel, town
Colachel is a small port town in Kanyakumari district located about 30 kilometers northwest of Kanyakumari. It features a natural harbor protected by rock formations, with streets lined with shops and a working waterfront where fishing and trade remain the main activities.
From the 16th to the 18th centuries, Colachel was a significant trading port that attracted ships from distant places bringing goods and people. This long period of maritime commerce shaped the town and established its role as a regional trade hub that remains relevant today.
The name Colachel relates to the bay and its coastal character in local language. Life here revolves around the fishing community and trade, with people gathering at markets to buy fresh catch, fruits, and vegetables in a way that has defined this place for generations.
The port, markets, and beaches are easily accessible by walking through town, with basic accommodations and local food shops available. Visiting during the drier months offers calmer seas and better weather for exploring the waterfront and surrounding areas.
Two lighthouses mark the harbor: one built in 1925 that can be seen from about 7 miles away, and a smaller one from 1936 standing just 16 feet high. Both served to guide ships through the rocky waters at night and represent the town's long connection to maritime navigation.
